How to Have a Better, Smaller Government

Government is like a magnet for psychopaths and criminals. Even local, podunk governments are routinely troubled with graft and embezzlement. The smallest unit of government in the state of Ohio, the townships, are sometimes staffed by embezzlers and nepotists. Many government official positions are merely functionary jobs. It's a good question why those should exist in the first place.

Some amount of community decision making is necessary, though. Having a "trusted third party" is really valuable. Unfortunately, most of the current schemes to institutionalize that third party are fubar and can't be reformed.

Get rid of elections. Choose "officials" from a hat or with a lottery system. Make it a part time, uncompensated job, so the office holder will be burdened by the position. It will be a chore. They won't go around electioneering and hanging out at constituent's gatherings. The only "election" would be a recall election to fire an official.

Apply the same system to choosing judges and law enforcement officials. Winnow down the legal system to some common sense, simple natural law rules. Throw out all the millions of pages of administrative, nonsensical laws, like patent laws and intellectual property rights.

All this would  kill off corporations, too. There would only be sole proprietorship. People running companies would be liable for damaging individuals property and lives.
