For example, would fusion power plants be a game changer? I don't think so.
Ironically, I think dependence on technology moves humanity ever closer to catastrophic failure with each advance. Fusion really epitomizes that. A functioning fusion power plant will only be possible with an entire high tech economy and high tech supply chain in place. New exotic, highly processed materials will be essential for the power plants, for example. Fabrication of parts will require high tech machines that require constant maintenance and their own exotic supply chains. Those power plants will be on the tippy top of the house of cards of civilization.
The top of the house of cards keeps demanding more resources and human energy, so much so that it corrodes the layers lower down. For example, the push for "electric everything", especially a transportation grid seems like it's so greedy that all competition for electric cars, for example, will possibly be eliminated by government fiat, and that's really pretty weird.
