The Cult of The Cosmic Mind
The story of Cain and Abel in the Bible is fleshed out in other non-canonical scriptures. Cain is the son of the serpent of the Garden of Eden in some interpretations. There are various esoteric/cult beliefs wrapped up in the tale. The serpent is wisdom in some of those--it's the Promethean figure. Prometheus gave fire to man.
Cain murders his brother, of course, and is cursed. His brother could do no wrong--he followed the natural order. Cain is cursed; he can do no right. I think this notion turns into the idea that "man" has been abandoned by god and is left to remake the world in man's image.
An associated belief is that the universe is composed of mind, or consciousness in some fundamental way. A computer can, in that school of thought, partake of consciousness and become a microcosm of the Universe. The toil of thousands of men and women has gone into building computers and software to try to make this happen.
These cult beliefs are pervasive.
