Everyone knew it was a bad idea to put lead in gas. Lead was known to be toxic and pernicious for many years before it went into gasoline as an anti-knock agent. However the "the science" people were bought and paid for by the companies that would profit from it. Harvard and Yale and other establishment ghoul factories puked up experts and experiments to green light lead as a fuel additive. The financial interests, e.g. the Rockefellers, that would gain from the scheme attacked and vilified their opposition in the controlled media.
It took decades of experience to phase out lead in gasoline and in paint.
The same scumbags are still in control of the economy and the government. They're the ones pushing the covid scam. They're "the science", e.g. science as advertising and PR, people.
