Two "western" (Normans and Venetians) forces sacked and destroyed a couple of cities in the old Byzantine empire in the 12th and 13th century. The sack of
Constantinople by "Latins" around 1204 was particularly bloody and destructive. One of the proto-reformers was the
Englishman John Wycliffe. I wonder if there's any thread that relates him to scholarship from the east.
