When the United States was young and the frontier was being opened, there was pervasive experimentation in different ways to live and "new" religions like Mormonism and myriad versions of protestantism that sought perfection in a basic way of life, or in primitive Christianity. John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed) was a pretty good example of a person who lived that way. I didn't know that he was a figure who was so associated with Ohio. There are a number of good articles on him online.
This one is pretty good.
