I've been watching some random videos by an ex-Amish guy. Lots of the elements of Amish life and society are pretty dumb, counterproductive, and damaging, just like any other segment of society. It provides a good counterpoint to the sugar-coated view of Amish life, or the rose colored glasses view one can obtain with casual contact with the Amish, like I have from time-to-time.
It's pretty interesting.
Is it possible to have an "Enlightened" and functioning religious community or will it always be a freak show? Almost every religious sect is plagued with pedophile priests, for example. It really doesn't matter which group it is: Jews, Catholics, various protestant priests have been busted diddling kids. The catholic church seems like a big gay pedo club. The prior pope even wrote a book about it.
